I just noticed at my local Duane Reade that toothpaste is locked up but roach traps are not.Not sure about the logic there, though obviously someone made that decision. In all probability the corporate office rather than individual store managers make those decisions. They have lists of "high shrink" items that get locked up, and in some cases there are no obvious explanations for why shoplifters target certain items. For instance, Oil of Olay has been a high theft item for many years, even as more expensive cosmetics are left alone. And in other cases the reasons are apparent: powdered baby formula is almost always locked up, not because desperate moms steal it to feed their infants, but because drug dealers use it as an extender for cocaine. |
