You could have driven into Manhattan via one of the non-tolled East River Bridges, driven uptown and crossed into the Bronx via one of the non-tolled bridges and avoided all tolls, just as you could have done before the Triborough Bridge was opened in 1936.2. The price of gold was $35/oz in 1936 through the early 1970's. It stands at approximately $1900/oz today. In terms of gold, the original quarter toll would be $13.57 today. |
