In multiple required classes I had in Law School, we were taught of the importance of being able to convey legal concepts to a lay audience. As an example, in the required Professional Responsibility class the professor stressed the importance of being able to explain legal procedure to your client so they can make informed decisions in areas that the rules say that is entirely the discretion of the client.Also, I took an elective that involved co-teaching with a HS teacher at a local HS an "Introduction to Law" class. Explaining legal concepts to HS students that came from diverse backgrounds really does help in practice. The textbook was also a bit dated. One of the early lessons was assessing the pros and cons of hypothetical "Good Samaritan" laws. The example it used was Kitty Genovese. That really was not something inner city students could relate to. Most would say they would beat the person up. Being knowledgable enough to use Sherrice Iverson and the final episode of Seinfeld I was better able to get them to understand the concept. |
