But then again, other components of gasoline, particularly hexane, toluene, and many others, are solvents too; it depends on what compounds you want to dissolve.The thing about ethanol is the lower BTU compared to larger-molecule hydrocarbons, as well as having to use different kinds of material in engine gaskets that won't be dissolved by ethanol. Just for reference, gasoline generally has hydrocarbon compounds that range between four carbons (butane, isobutane, cyclobutane) and twelve carbons. Also, ethanol was looked at as an antiknock agent over 120 years ago. |
