All 3 were shot down over land, ignoring the reasons for not shooting down the first.Were these flying at the same altitude as the first? The first was flying at 60K+ ft, well above where airliners fly. These were flying around 40K ft, well within where airliners fly. At that altitude the represented a navigation hazard. Therefore, there was an urgency for eliminating a hazard that wasn't present in the first instance. So none of these 3 were detected before reaching US soil. You don't know that. If they were detected before reaching US (and Canadian) soil, they would have to be over the ocean. Airliners don't fly over the ocean. Perhaps, just perhaps they were all launched from Alaska... Back around 1961 or 1962, the US conducted a Cold War drill to "test the early warning system." All civilian air traffic was grounded for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Some MIT students bought some army surplus weather balloons, attached an aluminum foil reflector to it and drove down to Cape Cod to launch them. The wind carried them close to Otis Air Force Base. |
