Possessives throw a bit of a money wrench into the works. I remember a third-grade teacher telling the class the following:"Does everyone have their book?" is incorrect. "Does everyone have his or her book?" is how you should say it. This was decades ago. There was no only-two-genders agenda behind her instruction. She was simply correcting what she saw as a common careless error. You have to admit though that "their book" is a lazier, easier construction. |
