Yes, there is. It's gross misuse of the science of statistics.

A and B are heavily correlated. B and C are heavily correlated. A and C are, not surprisingly, correlated, though much less so than either A and B or A and C.

And yet the statistical statement you trumpet is that A and C are correlated.
