it's not like gas stations are scarce

True. But:

- They aren't all open 24 hours.

- In rural areas they aren't that dense.

- You could have a traffic jam just when you're low.

- Just when you're low you realize you're late to where you need to get.

All sorts of reasons not to get too low.
