Heat pumps have to get cheaper, which I expect they will.Just saw a webinar on a successful heat pump installation in a 9,000 square foot (10 unit) apartment building in Manhattan. Cost: $178,000, of which NYSERDA paid about half. A new gas boiler for that size building would be 30-50K. It's not truly apples to apples because much of the infrastructure for the new gas boiler (steam pipes, chimney) is already there. But that's usually the case. Definitely for new buildings heat pumps should already be competitive. |
