My father realized what you are saying sixty years ago when I was a kid. Not only did he read most of the daily newspapers, and listen to the news on the radio, he made frequent trips to the library to read other sources so he could be informed. He would usually go to the New Republic and Christian Science Monitor, although we weren’t even Christian. Also, Scientific American and Natural Geographic. He didn’t care much for TV news although it was much better than than it is now. I would ask him why he would go to so many sources and his response was the New York Times doesn’t tell you everything. Yet today there are still those who think all you need are the Times, the Washington Post and CNN and you are all set.
