"How many private employees get every national holiday off?"Thats a case by case deal. Some do, some don't. And there's no such thing as "every". Even still, if they have enough motivation, you make the extra effort to vote. Thats why the polls close late in most states. "Plenty of people work in 7-day a week gigs, where somebody has to be on duty, holiday or not." True, like all civil servants. Major holidays force people to adapt. Thanksgiving dinner is late/early due to a work schedule, as an example. Some crafts offer "comp" days as in work a holiday & get an extra vacation day. Thats the way it goes in that line of work. "...making it paradoxically harder to get to the polls." I don't know of anyone who commuted to their polling place. Growing up in Woodside, it was always a short walk the the nearest school to cast your ballot. IMO having the day off minimizes the excuses for folks not to go out and vote. You want democracy, if it means that much to you, then go out and vote to maintain it. I can't think of any country who's people fought for the right to vote, then got it only to bitch about voting without actually going out to the polls. Mail in balloting encourages laziness and increases the potential for fraud. |
