Hospitals often turn away those who can't pay.

And if you treated in the emergency room and don't have insurance you may be discharged when the life-threatening emergency is over, even though the appropriate medical procedure would be to admit you into the hospital as an inpatient.

I do agree that treating people who do risky stuff differently from a financial perspective is a slippery slope that doesn't work.

However, I also think that it's unfair to charge people without insurance more than the insurance company is charged if they do have insurance, a common practice.
