Seems likely. My second thought is that he's hiding out in some no-questions-asked motel in a decent sized non-Florida southern city like Birmingham or Mobile, living off cash supplied by his parents. Grow a beard, grow long hair, and he could look like any other bum that no one pays attention to.

Hopefully the police have gotten a warrant to check how much cash the parents have withdrawn from their bank.
