Shylock in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice was a moneylender, and there were plenty of antisemitic overtones in his portrayal, making him out to be a greedy and vengeful loan shark, demanding the "pound of flesh" from rival Antonio as collateral. There's no evidence of any etymological link between "Shylock" and "shyster". |
