I can also attest to the strength of the addiction.My parents smoked about 1.5 million cigarettes between them. My father managed to quit at 76 because his doctor warned him he would probably lose his legs otherwise. He lived to 83 before dying of COPD. My mother never quit except for a few weeks following an emergency operation at age 80 for a smoking-caused aneurysm. She died at 87 of another aneurysm, and was found with a burnt-out cigarette in her hand. |
