My grandfather started smoking in his teens, when he had to drop out of school to work to support his mother and younger siblings (peer pressure from the older men at his job). Eventually, he got his HS equivalency (today's GED) and worked for first the NYCBT and later NYCTA (trolley motorman/bus driver/BMT motorman). But no matter how he tried, he couldn't stop smoking. He was concerned about lung cancer, especially after a celebrity (may have been Nat King Cole) died from it. But his lungs were fine. Apparently the carcinogens (sp?) passed by the throat, esphoguas (sp) and lungs and settled in his stomach. And that was what took him away at age 57. |
