There was a big drop off (45%) in the number of votes cast for the successor question. The number of No votes (5,840,283) cast in the first question exceeded the total number of votes cast for all 46 possible successors (5,057,345). Elder received 2,373,551 of these votes.That's a pretty decisive favorable vote for Newsom. He won against anybody and everybody combined.
