Years ago, whenever the subject of my brother being killed on 9/11, usually the first question out of the box was "was he a fireman?"
That used to royally piss me off. My response (when I was in the mood to argue) usually was NO! he was on the 98th Fl of the North Tower. He was with Marsh McLennan. So he wasn't a fireman. Does that make our loss any different? Does that somehow diminish the loss or make it hurt less. Does that somehow make his wife & 3 kids he left behind insignificant since he was "just" a civilian? Does that make his death somewhat of an after thought as in the civilians killed there were some form of peons compared to the firemen?
That usually ended the conversation right there.
Later on I found out that he was the fire warden of his floor. Maybe that counts for something,
