My group was not a vigilante one.

We never took any direct physical action in helping to prevent crime. If something was occuring it was called in over radio (CB at the time) to our base and then called in by phone to 911 or to the Co-op City Security office for further action.

We would assist NYPD with things like traffic control, help if there were power outages, or be a presence during the occasional community fair.

Btw- over time the Co-op City Security department was granted police authority by both the City and the State of NY. All employees of the Department of Public Safety are fully trained and do carry sidearms. This does
take some of the pressure of the NYPD by dealing with local issues. The NYPD will still have to respond if there are arrests made or other such situation.

The civilian patrol disbanded in the mid-1980s due to lack of volunteers.
