An assembly line is self-regulating as an employee's missteps are noticed down the line and can lead to sanction. A piece rate is unnecessary, especially as it would be dependent on the speed of the line and equivalent to a wage rate for a worker of expected efficiency. There are jobs where productivity is decided by the employee and therefore a piece rate would be appropriate. I have worked such a job in an industrial setting and would have preferred a piece rate. |
