Actually hate crime laws aren't necessary. The laws in place are good enough and if it is a hate crime that is something that can be considered in the trial and more importantly in sentencing. An extra charge is unnecessary and could even be unconstitutional as it's a thought crime. And saying someone can't understand a hate crime because they are highly unlikely to be the target of a hate crime is ridiculous. You don't have to experience something to understand it. For example I am not a woman but I understand abortion is murder.And anyone of any ethnic, gender, religion, or sexual orientation can be a victim of a hate crime. For example, I arrested a female black traffic agent for assaulting an Italian man who she was writing a ticket to and added a hate crime charge as she said "you Italians think you own the world". (I charged it as it was on the books and it was my job even though I don't believe in hate crime laws) |
