It was supposed to be a savior of AM radio. From the late 70s to the early 90s, many AM stations were broadcasting in stereo. Manufacturers jumped on the AM stereo bandwagon. There were boomboxes & Walkmans in addition to cars radios capable of receiving an AM stereo signal.
But, enter Gov't interference. The FCC could not agree on format compatible with all of the receivers out there.
AM stereo radio demand and sales dropped. Stations stopped broadcasting in stereo, all thanks to FCC feet dragging. Next up was AM-HD. That never caught on either.
Bottom line, due to its technical inferiority, AM radio is dying a slow death. Dozens of USA AM stations per year shut off their transmitters forever.
