Re: No More Covid Vaccine Available

Posted by Stephen Bauman on Sat Jan 16 00:32:28 2021, in response to Re: No More Covid Vaccine Available, posted by Henry R32 #3730 on Fri Jan 15 23:03:59 2021.

Thank you for including the source link. Pfizer executive Dr. William C. Gruber told The New York Times that the efficacy of the first dose is probably about 52% compared to 95% after the second dose. Did Dr. Gruber include the confidence interval around that 52%.

The question is how effective need a vaccine be? Scientists are hoping for a coronavirus vaccine that is at least 75% effective, but 50% or 60% effective would be acceptable, too, Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said during a Q&A.

So, that 52% is on the low border line of what they were looking for back in August.

The next question is how good is the vaccine in preventing Covid's transmission? That question hasn't been answered in any of the vaccine tests. A vaccine could prevent a person from getting Covid but that person would still be capable of transmitting it.

A recent article suggests this is a distinct possibility.

The next stage of the study will evaluate whether people who have recovered from COVID-19 could still carry and transmit the SARS-CoV-2 virus which causes it. However, PHE warned that early evidence suggests that some individuals carrying high levels of virus and could continue to transmit the virus to others, even though they have immunity themselves.
