After spending most of the war stateside, his units shipped out to the Pacific pretty late in the war. He believed he was scheduled for a "vacation trip" to Japan, but President Truman cancelled it. On one of the islands, they got a boatload from New Zealand, and it was served every way possible every day. He grew to detest it. Even when he took me to "the petting zoo" he would spit at the sheep. One night at dinner-mom "I know how hard you've been working lately, so tonight I made a special dinner, lambchops" One went sailing past my face at about 90 mph.... |
