That was done because it was proving very difficult to stop popular pagan celebrations even after Constantine outlawed all "cults" except Christianity. Christianity's success in Europe can be traced to a conscience attempt to introduce the new faith by slapping Christian meaning to existing rituals. All the evidence you need to see of that in practice is this Celtic Cross from Ireland:  It's just a cross slapped onto an ancient Celtic symbol for the afterlife! |
