"Natural causes" falls under "other", as I pointed out. It includes "out-of-hospital illness".COVID deaths are listed as COVID because even though they can occur in or out of a clinical setting, the root cause is still the same (e.g., COVID put a patient in the hospital, and he died of it despite receiving treatment). The category tells why, not what. What you get on the death certificate can list what happened in greater detail on the reverse, but all NYC deaths fall into one of the five categories I listed. |
