Why? You pay for others to use the public library, for other people's kids to go to public school, for other people's garbage to be collected, for other people to have police and fire protection, for other people to have streets, highways and airports, for other people to enjoy parks and beaches. Yes, you benefit from all these things, too, but ensuring that everyone has access to healthcare benefits you, too.

*Note, for example, that NYPD protection and FDNY fire suppression are free, but the EMS Command will bill you for ambulance service. Why? Because they can, and healthcare is, indeed, considered a "privilege" reserved for those who can pay for it. Human life should never be contingent on personal means, but here we are in the last developed country in the world that insists this is correct. Historians in a more enlightened future society will look back on that, and shake their heads in disgust.
