The later DNA evidence supporting Matias Reyes' statement that he attacked Meili, acting alone, plus the contemporary accounts that the detectives and Linda Fairstein were looking for an easy clearance on a high-profile, White female victim case. The CP5 kids fit the profile, and were known to be in the park that night.Then there's the fact that each of those kids got significant details of the attack wrong in their individual "confessions", a fact that is treated at length in novels about the case and the When They See Us docudrama. As teenagers, they were no match for experienced interrogators. The ADA knew about these discrepancies, but went to court anyway. Nobody was worried about five inner-city Black kids represented by public pretenders. The CP5 were convicted before they ever got in front of a judge or jury. |
