And the problem with this isn’t that he’s wrong, it’s that he said it in a really crude way. What he meant was that “Latino” includes people like Mexicans and Puerto Ricans who have little in common other than their ancestors being from former Spanish colonies. “African American” almost entirely includes people who are descended from slaves in the USA alone. Yes, there are Caribbean-Americans and also African immigrants and their descendants (like Obama himself), but it’s a smaller subset. |
