Or longer.I've looked at old census records in upstate areas that were very fundamentalist (there was a "Church of Pilgrim Holiness" with a decent sized congregation maybe into the 1960s or so). The really old fashioned biblical names went out of fashion by 1870. The grandfather of the guy I knew, named Pardon, was born circa 1850. And as an adult he was generally called Pardee (I'm guessing because Pardon was too quaint by then). |
