The problem with that is that people nevertheless do not consider "citizenship from birth" synonymous with "natural born citizenship." Sane people still consider Tammy Duckworth and Ted Cruz to be US Citizens, but some of them might legitimately believe that they are ineligible to the presidency.Since the only difference between naturalized citizens and natural-born citizens is whether or not they can run for president, it's not something that comes up often enough for there to be a lot of case law on the topic. I brought up McCain because he came the closest to becoming president while being born abroad, as he was the only such major party nominee. And the response was that he was an exception because he was born on a "military installation," which is just pure ignorance because being born on a military base has never meant anything. Note that the Panama Canal Zone had special rules as of the time of McCain's birth and until it ceased to exist, but this had nothing to do with being a "military installation." A person born on Diego Garcia will not automatically become a US Citizen. |
