Charges like "obstructing government administration" and/or "disorderly conduct" are tailor-made for just such needs. I've seen to his play out myself, with a CNN commentator I know who has been openly critical of the police on the air.He was filming the protesters going down the West Side Highway, and several cops walked past him, turned around, came back, and arrested him for "failure to obey", even though he was wearing his credentials. Took him a full 36 hours to get out. Still has to go see the judge. The same thing happened to a CNN crew in Minneapolis, except the cops didn't know the camera was live, and the whole country saw it happen. CNN Legal was fuming about that. The cops locked up the on-camera journalist, the cameraman, AND the producer, unprovoked. Remember, the entire incident went out LIVE. (PS, a white CNN crew half a block away wasn't even bothered by the police.) Retaliatory arrests occur all the time. |
