Re: In the Wake of Aunt Jemima, the Following Should Be Banned/Renamed - Part 1

In the mid-70s, the Doobies were my favorite group. I saw them live at the Assembly Hall at the University of Illinois in December 1973. The next spring, they released the What were once vices are now habits album. I was in the record store, and I saw a new single by them from that album. I had not heard anything on the radio (WLS out of Chicago), but I did something that I had never done before (and never have done since): I bought a single without ever hearing it. I got home and I realized that I didn't know which side was the A side (I'm sure there is coding on the label indicating which side is which, but I didn't know about any of that shit back then). So I played both sides, and I preferred Black Water. Subsequently, I did find out that Black Water was the B side and the A side was Another Park Another Sunday. I still preferred Black Water. Early the next year, I was back in Brooklyn and was in a store that had a radio station playing over their PA (I think they were playing that absolute crapfest of a station 99X (WXLO 98.7), and I hear Black Water being played. I was like, why is 99X playing a B side from last year? Then later on, I kept hearing it, and I realized it was now an A-side. I later was getting records and I saw it on sale (with a different B side). Of course, I already had it. Apparently, some DJs liked it better as I did and started playing it, and the Doobies decided to release it. Good move, as it became their first #1 single, topping the Billboard Hot 100 on March 15, 1975 (and the only #1 with the "proper" Doobies lineup with Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons (who wrote Black Water). I try to ignore the later Michael McDonald shitfest 🙄
