Vatican II is an interesting point in Church history.
Without many details I can say when I was in 7 and 8th grade we had a Brother teach us history and religion. Most of his religion class was church history. Very quickly what I remember from his class was that the church was a well organization throughout the 1950s. Suddenly the pope died. With no contingency plan for electing a new pope a consensus elected Pope John XXIII. The idea was that he would be a placeholder until a so called more suitable permanent pope could be discovered and ultimately elected.
The plan essentially backfired because John XXIII called the second Vatican council which suggested many changes in an attempt to bring the church up to modern standards.
Again a very brief synopsis of Vatican II.
