A higher education's value does not depend on the mechanism by which the tuition was paid.

One of my grand daughters is in the military serving on a combat vessel. When she leaves the military she will have earned a government funded education.

That's the reverse of the situation 50+ years ago. One went to college to avoid serving in the military on a combat vessel. :=)

In what way does that compare to some doper studying mass communications at ASU deserve a government funded education?

There are substance abusers in the miltary. Military binge drinker abuse incidence is higher than the civilian population. The detrimental effects of substance abuse are independent of the substance's legality.

I don't know whether your objection is to the course of study (mass communications) or the university (ASU).

I could understand the university objection were it for a for-profit institution like the University of Phoenix. For-profit schools have been cited for ripping off the students with exaggerated claims and exorbitant student loans. A disproportionate share of their victims have been GI's.
