When did people start believing that the President was primarily responsible for the state of the economy? Some time in the 20th century, I guess, but I'm not sure when. "Managing the economy" is certainly not one of the President's Constitutional duties. Most of the graphs in that article show no marked changes when the administration changes, and there is good reason for that. Also, why all the focus on the growth of GDP and payroll, rather than their absolute numbers, per capita.
