Even though I disagree with bingbong, I can understand how not everyone will feel the same way about a pregnancy. That being said, I don't think we, as a society, should base our laws on subjective feelings. I would never advocate someone should get an abortion unless it is necessary to save the life of the mother or continuing the pregnancy would cause her permanent physical harm or the fetus has some chromosomal abnormality that is incompatible with life. That being said, I do believe that this is one issue where a patchwork of state laws is not a good solution. Whether someone has access to an abortion should not be dependent on what state the person happens to live in. Also, it has effects on interstate commerce if people have to travel to have the procedure legally. Moreover, it is less safe to have it done in only a fraction of states because the facilities would be under more pressure to perform abortions faster to see more patients. Unlike some other procedures, an abortion is extremely time sensitive. Balancing the interests of both mother and fetus, before the fetus is viable outside of the mother the rights of the mother trump (no pun intended).
