I first rode past 223 Martin Luther King Drive on the Jackson car from Hoboken and Journal Square towards my cousins' house in Greenville. Presumably, I did not notice Sacred Heart church and school and the store front that would become a Hassidic market, target of murderers. YouTube has a video of the closure of the church, but the school was in lock-down during the rampage across the street.--- Southbound, we would ride the Jackson car past the next parish, St. Paul's, and get off at Winfield Avenue. Northbound, very often late at night, we would walk to Old Bergen Road and take the first transit vehicle (Jackson car or Bergen Avenue bus) that would bring us to Journal Square and the Tubes. --- Decades later, the Bergen Avenue bus drivers suffered so many robberies that a special yellow light was placed on the roof to help summon police. Now Hassids are moving in, perhaps because of low purchase price of housing. |
