Back in the 1960's in Southwestern Bell territory of the Bell System 288 was used for line testing. Dial 288 wait for a dial tone dial 8 again, hang up and the phone would ring.IIRC, with New York Telephone, it was 2-2-0, wait for dial tone and then 2. Then your phone would ring back.
