Bevin requests recanvass of vote totals asserting there were 'irregularities'

Republican Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin’s campaign requested a recanvass of vote totals that show him losing his reelection bid.

His campaign sent a statement Wednesday afternoon saying it is doing so due to the close nature of the gubernatorial race and multiple reports of voting irregularities.

“The people of Kentucky deserve a fair and honest election. With reports of irregularities, we are exercising the right to ensure that every lawful vote was counted,” Bevin said in a news release.

In a 5 p.m. news conference on Wednesday, Bevin expanded on the irregularities.

He said thousands of absentee ballots were wrongly counted, people were turned away from polling sites and ballots were placed into boxes instead of ballot machines in Jefferson County. Bevin said his team is corroborating the allegations.

WLKY reached out to the Jefferson County Board of Elections and officials said they are confident that the county’s results are 100% accurate.

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes said she will forward the request to the State Board of Elections.

She said unofficial vote totals show Bevin with a 5,189-vote deficit to Democrat Andy Beshear. Click here to see vote totals for Kentucky/Indiana races.

County boards of elections will convene at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, to conduct the recanvass. As soon as it is complete, the county boards of elections will file their recanvass reports with the secretary of state.

Grimes said her office should have results within a day.

She called the race Tuesday night for Beshear, who declared victory.

He made a formal announcement about his transition into the governor’s office on Wednesday.

Beshear’s campaign sent the following statement in response to Bevin's recanvass request:
“Last night, the people of Kentucky elected Andy Beshear as their next governor. Today, Governor-Elect Beshear is already working on his transition so that he can best serve the people of Kentucky on day one. We hope that Matt Bevin honors the results of the recanvass, which will show he received fewer votes than Andy Beshear. As has been reported, a ‘recanvassing has never changed the result of a Kentucky election.’”
On Wednesday, Bevin called Grimes’ decision to call the election so quickly “a little suspect.”
