My people went by patronyms. For a few ancestral lines, I can trace my ancestry back a long ways because a guy wrote a book about everyone buried in the Jewish cemetery in Berlin. Interestingly, in the 17th and 18th centuries, there's a mix of patronyms, name of the town as surname, and regular family surnames. I have a 4-greats grandmother born 1720 only named Jette, tochter der Gerson. But a few generations earlier, born in the 1600s, I have ancestors using all three formats. One is called Baruch Minden (born in Minden, Germany) and another is Jente Hamel (from Hamelin). Yet in the same time frame I have an ancestor known as Benjamin Wulff (aus Wilna) whose father was Simcha Wolff Wilna. |
