It's absurd on multiple levels.1. The phrase is accurate, and need not be used in a bigoted or xenophobic manner. They are present in the United States in a manner that is contrary to its laws. Illegal does not need to mean criminal. Someone who bicycles the wrong way on a one way street is engaging in illegal activity even though not criminal. 2. It's of course extremely difficult to determine when something is done in a hateful manner, which is the problem with all hate crime laws. 3. Is it actually any more friendly to call someone the presumably still permitted "undocumented non-resident?" |
