at the same time, as they are incapable of making decisions, they are not really members of the religion because they lack the capacity to consent to join it.

I don't know about other religions but Catholicism somewhat rectified this by moving confirmation to something like 7th grade. I remember religion teachers and clergy framing it as a choice whether or not to continue being Catholic. There was some work to be done (had to find a saint to take their name as our middle/confirmation name and write a paper that would not be graded on them) which could be skipped if not getting confirmed, adding an incentive for lazy folk to opt out.

That said, Catholicism, after having been burned by the Galileo scandal, has been pro-science ever since and has no problem with vaccination, evolution, big bang theory, etc.
