I saw 9/11 happen before my eyes from the window of my 18th floor office at 110 William Street three blocks east of the WTC. I saw the flames, the people falling, the buildings collapsing, the smoke and the ash. I heard the screams from the streets below, heard police and fire sirens suddenly hushed. I felt the rumble on my floor caused by the falling debris.I remember every detail of that day without exception, as if it just happened. The only other day in my entire 54+ years on this rotten planet that I remember with equal clarity is the day my father died very suddenly. I can’t even look at these pictures without feeling physically ill and wanting to cry. It all comes back - the horror, the grief, the feeling of utter helplessness in the face of pure evil. I just can’t. I saw a therapist for awhile after 9/11. He was pretty sure I have a form of PTSD from witnessing it. I will never forget 9/11. No matter how long I live. |
