You realize that the number "39" excludes every VP who succeeded to the presidency and was not subsequently elected? Why single-out Ford?

Trump is the 44th person to serve as president,* given that Cleveland was both the 22nd and 24th president. Five people succeeded to the presidency without being elected president: John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Chester A. Arthur, and Gerald Ford.

Teddy Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry S Truman, and Lyndon B. Johnson were all elected president in their own right subsequent to their elevation to the presidency.

*Not counting Dick Cheney during Bush's colonoscopies and the apocryphal case of David Rice Atchison.
