I remember after I graduated law school in 1990, I had about $25,000 in loans. (Law school was much less expensive then.) There was a recession in 1990 and I couldn't get a job, so I didn't make the loan payments. I started getting calls from the banks demanding payment, even if I had to borrow money from friends and relatives. I used to routinely hang up on them, figuring that suing me wouldn't do them any good, because I had no money to pay them. The banks eventually just capitalized the outstanding payments so by the time I got a job 18 months after I graduated, I owed closer to $30,000. I can't imagine what people are going through today owing $150,000 in loans. |
