and not to forget Duane Eddy...
not distorted per se, but his heavy reverb gave it a whole new sound

heavy guitars but bluesy; good'n'loud when turned up:
The Ventures - Guitar Boogie Shuffle
also good'n'loud at eleven and yeah, certainly metal in its own way:
The Dynatones - Steel Guitar Rag

Kinks mentioned :) - but must include early Who also
Stones - 19th Nervous Breakdown - just turn it up

fast forward to 1968: Blue Cheer - Summertime Blues, Out of Focus, Dr. Please....
I saw them May 68 early show Fillmore East - records didn't come close to their live metal - could've crumbled sections of the Great Wall of China. Sound went right through you at the threshold of pain

and the MC5's first album.... side one

Sabbath, and that first generation were not a reaction to Woodstock - they more like musicians who'd listened to Cream - and worked up a formula: play it louder, slower, and a bit more distorted, and we'll sell albums just like they did. Lester Bangs was the first to call them on it.
