In 1915 and 1917, several eastern neighborhoods in the Rockaways, including Far Rockaway, attempted to secede from Queens County and wanted to join Nassau County but their attempts were vetoed by NYC Mayor John Purroy Mitchel.Interesting. A lot of things would be different today. I assume if that had happened, the Board of Transportation (or was it the TA by then?) would not have bought the Rockaway line from the LIRR. |
