"Deviant behavior" by the standards of the era, which were wrong. Just because something is legal, doesn't always make it right; likewise just because something is illegal doesn't always make it wrong (Prohibition, for example).It was also illegal for gays to: Be served alcohol Dress in gender non-conforming clothing unless taking part in a public stage performance Teach in schools or universities Sit closer than fifteen inches from each other in a bar or club Gay bars were by definition illegal The state had no compelling public safety or other interest in enacting these laws, except to police what consenting adults did with their own lives. Oh, and if my very plain recollection of sex with my boyfriend made you squeamish, too bad. You asked. I could have described it in graphic detail. |
