Re: Scores Nabbed In Huge College Admissions Scheme

I'd be less bothered about Affirmative Action if it were based on economic background or the educational opportunities that the student had growing up.

Instead, affirmative action programs use race/ethnicity as a proxy for economic status rather than actually looking into the student's historical opportunity.

My children are African-American. My wife and I have been lucky enough to provide them with a very nice upper-middle class life and they have attended some of the best schools in the US and Europe. As my youngest gets set to apply to universities in the US, it seems very wrong that she could deny a spot for a less-economically advantaged African American student simply by (truthfully) checking a box on her application.

With respect to the original story, charge 'em all with whatever they can charge them with -- bribery, racketeering , mail fraud, whatever. It's just one more item that makes me wonder why on earth it makes sense for US Universities run scholarship athletic programs.
